The bluffer’s guide to wine: pretending you are a sommelier

The bluffer’s guide to wine: pretending you are a sommelier

According to published figures, the UK is the sixth biggest wine consumer in the world. Back in 2013, we packed away approximately 53.3 million nine-litre cases of white wine, and 55.2 million red. So yes, we do drink a lot of wine although most of us probably know very little about it. Here’s a bluffer’s guide to get stuck in and let people think you know all about the UK’s favourite tipple.

Like it

It may sound basic, but the basics are pretty important. If you aren’t keen on it then it doesn’t matter how many gold medals its won, you probably still won’t like it. Therefore, stick to what you know and if you don’t like it then steer clear. This way, if someone asks you about it you can swiftly move on to “your better option”, clever eh?

Be honest

Always be honest about your opinions. Good wine merchants always appreciate honest feedback. Plus, there really isn’t any point in wasting your time on something that doesn’t tickle your tastebuds.

Swirl it, sniff it

Yep, that thing you see the REAL experts do does work. When tasting a wine, you should remember several key elements. Swirl the wine around the glass, take a sniff, and when you do eventually sip be sure to draw some air in with the wine. This way you are sure to get the very best out of that wine and truly determine whether you like it or not.

Don’t think about price

Of course, this depends on the size of your wallet. You should try to ignore the price tag when given something to taste. But of course, if you don’t like it (even if it is the expensive option) be sure to voice your opinion. If you prefer the cheaper option, good for you- you are going to save soooo many pennies which is CERTAINLY NOT a bad thing.
